How to never miss a workout


I believe that for many people (including myself) losing momentum and consistency with workouts is the #1 obstacle to our health and fitness. 

This becomes especially dangerous when combined with an all-or-nothing mindset.

Many years ago, and shoot dang - I can almost say decades ago (emphasis on the 's') I would skip a workout if I didn't have time to do the entire workout prescription. This is such a strange concept for me to think about now, but I just didn't have my mind right. As if getting 50-80% of the work completed wouldn't provide any benefit? So silly and anti-wild.

Back to the present.

I essentially never miss a day of 'working out' because I have redefined my definition of what that means. 

Did I intentionally exercise my body? Yes or no.

The idea is to make it extremely easy to say yes.

Did you go for a walk? Yes.

Did you do 7 Rows on pocket monkii? Yes.

Backyard soccer sesh with your kids? Yes.

Ruck? YES!

I've set the bar extremely low for what I consider to be a "workout". This makes my goal of being consistent effortless to maintain and it's consistency that matters most.

5 Pushups per day for 365 days = 1,825 pushups in a year. That work matters.

My intention is not to encourage you to do less and call it a workout in order to slack off. Instead, I wanted to share this mental heuristic that helps me maintain the most important aspect to longterm health and fitness - consistency.

One of my go-to strategies is to do a 'workout' first thing in the morning. Recently, this has been a 10-30 minute Yoga-esc session first thing after I wake up.

I'll also regularly throw in a morning Ruck or run with my friendly beast (dog named Doug) so get some sunlight, fresh air and help to set my circadian rhythm. It's amazing how impactful 10-minutes outside can be.

Another go-to of mine is the following:
3 sets of 10-15 reps of:

This takes 5 minutes or less and if you go hard is a legit workout. I find it especially useful when traveling or other times in life where getting in a hour workout isn't possible. All I need is pocket monkii and I'm good to go.

If you did 3 sets of 10 reps with 3 different exercises every day that is 90 reps total each day. That is 32,850 total reps in a year - that's LEGIT!
