The TL;DR was basically:
Eating healthy is hard. I don’t have time. So I order out.
And it got me thinking...
I think one of the best ways to learn about health is simply to observe the behaviors of healthy people.
I’m far from perfect, but I’d say I’m probably healthier than the average American.
So instead of giving you another nutritional philosophy, here’s what a pretty normal day of eating looks like for me.
Breakfast
-
Black coffee
-
6 eggs cooked in butter
-
1 avocado
-
Salt
Lunch
-
1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt
-
Granola
-
Banana
-
Honey
Afternoon snack - some combination of:
-
Fruit
-
Nuts
-
Crackers
-
Peanut butter
Dinner
-
Grilled bone-in chicken thighs with seasoning salt and a little BBQ sauce
-
Sweet potato fries
-
Salad with mixed greens, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, olive oil, nutritional yeast, parmesan and balsamic vinegar
Dessert
-
2–3 spoonfuls of Noosa yogurt
That's it.
And I'm not saying you should eat exactly like me.
The point is that these meals are incredibly easy to make, relatively inexpensive and made mostly from real food.
Equipment-wise, you could make almost all of it with a frying pan, an oven and/or a grill.
I also eat basically the same breakfast and lunch most days.
If we have leftovers from dinner, I'll eat those for lunch instead.
I use condiments with added sugar.
I eat granola.
I put honey on yogurt.
I dip chicken in BBQ sauce.
I just don't eat huge amounts of those things, and there isn't much added sugar elsewhere in my diet.
Some nights we make homemade pasta or get more creative with an Asian-inspired rice bowl.
Sometimes we grab Indian takeout.
Sometimes we'll go get burgers after a big climb.
But here's probably one of the biggest advantages I have:
Ordering takeout or delivery almost never crosses my mind.
Cooking something simple at home is the default.
I don't follow a named diet.
I don't meticulously track macros.
I don't spend two hours meal-prepping every Sunday.
Most of the time I just eat real food that I make myself.
And I eat a lot of the same things over and over again.
So if you're overwhelmed by all the nutrition advice out there, remember:
You don't need the perfect diet.
You probably just need a handful of simple meals made from mostly real food that are easy enough to become your default.
Simple works.
And simple can still be delicious.
